principal Steele letter

Greetings,

Spring is in the Air! With the sun coming out and the flowers starting to bloom and the smell of barbecue on the horizon a lot of students (and the adults who serve them) are ready for SUMMER. Personally, I don’t blame them. It’s been a long cold winter in Chicago and we are all ready to relax and enjoy the warm weather.

However, school is not done until June 4th and we have to FINISH STRONG. This year we have accomplished a lot: Nearly 3 points growth in Reading and English at the Freshmen and Junior Levels, a decrease in our Tier 3 and 4 behaviors, an increase in attendance and an overall greater sense of belonging at AIM.

Despite those leaps and bounds, we are still below our goal when it comes to Overall GPA and On-Track Status at various grade levels. A student is off track if they have one or more Fs in their Core Academic courses. If they carry an F to the end of the semester, then that student must take Credit Recovery to get back on track.

We monitor student performance weekly by reviewing teacher grade books and via our GPA and On Track Reports. Our MTSS (Multi Tiered Systems of Support) Team provides support to our  teachers who have high failure rates in their individual classes and interventions and strategies to support students who are struggling in multiple classes.

Although this system is effective, we do need your support to reach our 3.0 GPA goal which means that students should be striving to get a B or better in all of their classes. That means they need to:

  • Show up,

  • Pay attention

  • Do their work

  • Seek support if they don’t understand

  • Turn In  their work.

If we as a PHAMILY, in the classroom, in the building and at home all share these same 5 expectations for ALL of our students, then  each Young Phoenix @  AIM will continue to SOAR! Then come Juneteenth, there will be no Credit Recovery to be done and we can celebrate OUR ASCENSION to the next level!!!

With a whole lotta love,

Dion Steele
